Governor PB Acharya has greeted the press fraternity in Nagaland and wished them success in their endeavours on the occasion of National Press Day. In his greetings today, the Governor said it is the day on which the Press Council of India started functioning as a moral watchdog to ensure that not only the press maintains the high standards expected from this powerful tool but also that it was not bound by the influence or threats of any external factors.
Among the four pillars of democracy, media has greater potential and power to create better world and better future, he said and urged the press fraternity to continue to strive to maintain high standard while reporting.
Stating that there should be a mechanism for maintaining the standard of the newspaper reporting and thereby ensuring that all the guidelines are adhered to by the reporters, Acharya also said there should be a constant review of the quality of reporting and improvement in the guidelines followed by the media organizations all over the country to continuously improve the quality and maintain the consistency of news reporting.
The Governor further stated that role of the press in nurturing awareness of fundamental duties among citizens, in preserving rich composite heritage and tradition of the country and in promoting democracy and in arousing popular conscience to promote peace, harmony and brotherhood transcending barriers of caste, religion and sectional interests are commendable.
