Lady Governor Kavita Acharya offers to adopt a government school as guest teacher

NAGALAND Governor P. B. Acharya today appealed the Naga people to accept the appointment of R N Ravi as the new Interlocutor for Naga peace talks.
The Governor was reacting to the disagreement expressed by various civil societies in the state following the appointment of Chairman of Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) R. N. Ravi as the new interlocutor by the Central Government on August 29 last.
In his maiden interaction with media persons at Raj Bhavan here, Acharya said the new BJP-led NDA government at the Centre is concerned for the North East and it also has the guts to solve the problems of the region, including the Naga political issue.
He said the right time has come and the people of the state should give chance towards finding a solution to the Naga political issue by accepting the new interlocutor.
“We are in an advantageous position as the present government in the Centre wants to solve the problem and march ahead,” he said.
This, he said, would help in bringing about peace, development and progress to the state.
Acharya, who had been working as student and political activist in the region for last several decades, said that the people are tired as nothing has come out during the last 17 years of peace process and therefore it has to be expedited.
“If Nagaland can start in the right direction, it will improve the entire North Eastern Region,” he said.
Expressing concern over the deficit financing of the State, which has crossed over Rs. 1252 crore for the fiscal 2014-15, he said the Accountant General of the state should be bold enough to dig out all corruptions.
He also opined that measures should be taken up to explore and exploit available natural resources such as oil, mineral and hydro-power to improve the financial health of the state.
The Governor also emphasised the need for strengthening the ‘3Es – Education, Electricity and Employment’ for the state to progress ahead.
He said that progress of a State depends on providing right kind of education to the youth and making them efficient and employable. He expressed concern of the many government schools in the State having a record of 70% proxy teachers. He said that the State needs a major change in the system and to utilize all possible energy and capacity to upgrade the schools.
Urging all the educated Nagas, particularly the women force, to contribute in raising the downtrodden people, he announced that his wife, Kavita Acharya with MA, B. Ed has offered herself to adopt a government school anywhere in Kohima and serve as a guest teacher or in whatever way she can help to the school.
In the line of higher education, the Governor mooted the idea for exchange of lecturers for one month at a time between the different universities of the country. This will promote national integration while also empowering the school where he/she teaches. He also dwelt on the importance of learning tribal dialects and cited the example of Mumbai University’s acceptance to accept five dialect (6 months certificate course) including Nagaland. He informed that resource persons for teaching the Naga dialect will be those Naga people settled in the Metros.
“This way mindset about the ignorance of the mainland about NE would be changed”, he observed.
Amongst many other concerns, the Governor also that the educated young Nagas can bring a great change to the working system of the state and appealed to all working outside the state to come back and contribute their knowledge in taking Nagaland forward.
Meanwhile, the Governor also said that his posting to Nagaland is a deliberate choice and he is here to perform.
