DIMAPUR — Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio have expressed shock and pain over the demise of the state’s senior-most legislator in the current Assembly, Noke Wangnao, who was also the advisor of Social Welfare.

The veteran politician, who was elected to the state assembly nine times during his political career spanning several decades, passed away Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research, Chümoukedim, on Monday after suffering from a cardiac arrest.

“A veteran political stalwart, Shri Noke Wangnao was an able and dynamic leader committed to the welfare and uplift of the people. His demise is an irreparable loss to the people of the State. His contribution as a true statesman to the people of Nagaland will be remembered for years to come,” read the condolence message from the governor issued on behalf of the people of Nagaland.

Mourning the sudden demise of the veteran legislator, Chief Minister Rio said “Baba Noke” was “not only a colleague to me but also a dear friend, a trusted advisor, an elder brother whom I looked up to and with whom I have shared a common political journey for decades”.

“He was a staunch regionalist, a principled leader, a true people’s representative and someone who never compromised his principles come what may.

“He had been elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on 9 occasions beginning from 1977, spanning more than 4 decades. This speaks volumes of his popularity, his deep-rooted connection with the masses, and the trust that was placed upon him by the people. Despite the multitude of challenges and difficulties he never wavered,” he said.

“My dear friend and colleague stood by my side through the good and bad days of our political journey, demonstrating unwavering loyalty and steadfast dedication. His commitment to our common cause was an embodiment of true friendship and partnership. He was not just a supporter, but a pillar of strength and a source of inspiration for all of us. We came together not just as colleagues, but as a family united by shared values, aspirations, and a journey that spanned decades. In an ever-changing political arena, finding someone who remains steadfast in their loyalty and support is a rare and precious gift. His dedication was not just a reflection of his commitment to our shared vision, but a testament to his character, integrity, and the values he held dear,” he added.

“He was one of the senior-most leaders whose wisdom, leadership and guidance was still very needed by the State, especially by the people of the eastern region. His demise is a great loss to all of us, particularly to the Konyak community and the eastern Nagas, and the vacuum he leaves behind will be impossible to fill. I will treasure the fond memories we made together and I will remain ever grateful to him for all that he contributed towards my leadership.

“Today, we pay our respect to a leader who gave his best to the State and the people. He lived his life for others and gave his best for the betterment of all. His contributions and sacrifices to Nagaland and its citizens will be recorded in history for generations to come.

“My family members join me in conveying our deepest condolences to the members of the bereaved family and pray to Almighty God to let the departed soul rest in peace,” read the condolence message.
