Gorkhaland state demand finds resonance in Nagaland

Kohima, July 23 (EMN): In order to show solidarity to the ongoing movement in Darjeeling for the creation of a separate Gorkhaland state, the Nagaland Gorkha community has decided to join hands with the rest of the Gorkha communities on July 30 by holding a public rally at Kohima. The rally would be held under the banner “Global Gorkhaland Unity March”.
This was announced during a press conference at Gorkha Public Panchayat Hall, Kohima on Sunday evening, organized by the Nagaland Gorkha Association in collaboration with Gorkha Public Panchayat Kohima and other Gorkha NGOs.
The rally would start off from Gorkha ground, Chandmari after a brief program from 1 pm onwards and culminate at the Raj Bhavan where the Nagaland Gorkha community will submit their memorandum to the governor of Nagaland, addressed to government as well as the chief minister of West Bengal.
A copy of the memorandum will be submitted to deputy commissioners at different districts of the state where similar rallies would be conducted, it was informed.
Santu Thapa, president of Gorkha Public Panchayat, Kohima said that they were not supporting the Gorkhaland movement because they want to go to Gorkhaland but for the sake of their identity.
Nobin Pradhan, coordinator and president of Nagaland Gorkha Association, stated in a statement that the unity march mission was to unite and connect the entire Gorkha diaspora scattered across the world to aspire towards the common cause of Gorkhaland and to remember the 110 years of struggle to honour the 1200 martyrs and their families, and to raise a united voice against the violation of human rights in the Darjeeling Hills.
“We will march for the dreams and aspirations of our children. We will march to lend our voices to our brothers and sisters in Darjeeling. We will march for our identity, our language, our culture and our birthright in India. We will march for peace” read the statement.
Stating that Gorkhas of Nagaland being part of the community, will also be joining the Global March in four locations namely Kohima, Mokokchung, Wokha and Klphire, they also hoped some more locations in Nagaland will come forward and join them. The Global Gorkhaland Unity March in Nagaland is being held under the aegis of the Nagaland Gorkha Association.
