KOHIMA — Gorkha community on Friday observed Balidan Diwas (Martyrs’ Day) in honour of veer saheed Major Durga Malla and veer saheed Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse at GPPK Multi-utility Hall, Chandmari, Kohima.
The programme was organised by Gorkha Public Panchayat Kohima (GPPK) along with all NGOs, clubs and Jatiya Sansthas of the Gorkhas in Kohima with Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North), Maj. Gen. Vikas Lakhera, as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Maj. Gen. Lakhera said it is sad when somebody has to sacrifice their lives. He, however, stated that the two brave hearts sacrificed their lives for the country and urged the congregation to honour them so that the future generations take motivation from them.
He saluted and paid homage to the sacrifice of the two heroes and expressed hope that the younger generations would get motivation through them.
He also lauded the Gorkhas for their bravery in line of duty and for the nation by making immense sacrifices. He expressed happiness that Gorkhas have been upholding the tradition and culture and also passing it to the younger generation.
The programme began with lighting of lamp by the dignitaries while IGAR, parents of Captain Late Kenguruse and others joined in paying floral tribute to the martyrs.
GPPK president, Santu Thapa, delivered the welcome address, while Chandmari Gorkha Union secretary, Samir Thapa, tendered the vote of thanks.
Cultural performances by Monica and friends, Deepti Gurung and Friends, patriotic song by Karishma Baraily and welcome song by Vivela Club were other highlights of the programme.
In a related programme, Gorkha Students’ Union Chümoukedima District (GSUCD) observed 79th martyrdom day (Balidan Diwas) of Major Durga Malla, the first Gorkha soldier to sacrifice life for Independence, on August 25 at Gorkha community hall in Medziphema.
On August 25, 1944, Major Durga Malla of Indian National Army was hanged at Delhi Central Jail at the age of 31 years. The day is observed as Balidan Diwas by the Gorkha community all over India.
The special guest, Sambu BK, who is also the president Medziphema Gorkha Union, highlighted the contribution of Gorkha freedom fighters who laid their lives for the cause of the country. The GSUCD president, Jacob Sundas, urged the gathering to give befitting reverence to those who died for the cause.
