Konyak Union writes to Chief Minister urging rectification

DIMAPUR — At least 80% to 85% of Tizit town in Mon district have been demarcated within the State of Assam, thanks to faulty Google mapping.

In a letter written on Tuesday, the Konyak Union brought this discrepancy to the attention of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, specifying that Google’s misleading mapping boundary of lines falls between Mon District in Nagaland and Charaideo District in Assam.

“The current mapping boundary inaccurately extends deep into Mon District, aligning significantly towards Assam. Specifically, the boundary line covers nearly 80-85 percent (approx.) of Tizit Town, including government administrative, police and all other department building offices and public ground within Assam. Furthermore, this incorrect mapping also affects the villages of Hota-Hoti and Tekun, which were established within Mon District as early as the 1960s.

“As you are well aware that the State of Nagaland was officially created on December 1963 through a political agreement that bifurcated parts of Assam and incorporated territories from the Northeast Frontier Agency (NEFA), which was predominantly inhabited by Nagas. Historical records indicate a clear understanding of ancestral boundaries between the Ahoms of Assam and the Konyak Nagas of Mon District. Despite this, the official and bilateral recognition of these boundaries remains unresolved and is currently under Supreme Court adjudication”, the letter read.

According to the KU, the areas under Tizit Town and the villages of Hota-Hoti and Tekun fall entirely under Mon District.

“Therefore, the current misrepresentation on Google Maps is not only misleading but may also lead to technical discrepancies in official documentation and potential confrontation between the parties. In light of the above, we request your esteemed office to expedite the rectification and correction of these mapping inaccuracies with the concerned and responsible department.

“Addressing this issue promptly will help avoid further complications and ensure accurate representation of the boundary lines. Failing to address this matter promptly by the concerned department/authority and in the event of any eventualities arising out of this misinterpretation and incorrect information by the Google mapping, the Konyak Union shall not be held responsible,” it stated.
