Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today urged Tata group chairman Cyrus Mistry to explore potential areas of investment in Assam.
Gogoi held a meeting with Mistry after the inauguration of a Taj group hotel here and termed it as a “welcome step”.
“The Tatas have opened their hotel here. They are recruiting people. We have discussed various issues regarding investments. I explained to him the potential areas in the state. I knew Ratan Tata. He (Mistry) is new. We can make a new beginning,” he said.
The Assam chief minister said that the Taj has its own brand name and worldwide reputation. “The opening of the new hotel would contribute to the economic development.”
“It is a very good investment and you will realise it after five years,” Gogoi said.
Earlier speaking on the occasion of the 150-bed ‘Vivanta by Taj’ hotel inauguration, Gogoi said that his government wanted to make the state a hub of Southeast Asian countries.
“We want to expose our culture to the whole world,” he said.
Mistry said that several Tata companies have established their bases in the north-east and “we are delighted to share the proud history of this region”.
“It is a natural gateway for us and other Indian companies to access the market in countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan and China,” he said.
The design style of the hotel is inspired by the ‘Rang Ghar’, the amphitheatre of the Ahom dynasty. The main pavillion building of the property is inspired by Kamakshya temple while the motifs used for the main hotel building are a modern expression of Assam’s strong tradition of woven crafts.
‘The Vivanta by Taj’, he said, would promote tourism in the region. “The captivating natural beauty of the region would attract both Indian as well as foreign tourists”, he said.
Rakesh Sarna, managing director and CEO of Taj hotels resorts and palaces, said that the group remained committed to hotel industry in Assam and the northeastern region.
