Dimapur, Oct. 20 (EMN): As a prelude to centenary celebration of the school establishment, Government Middle School (GMS) at Sector A in Kigwema village conducted an environmental awareness programme at the school premises on October 19.
A press release from the school informed that the programme was conducted in collaboration with the department of Environment, Forests and Climate change, government of Nagaland, under National Mission on Himalayan Studies project (NMHS) titled “Increasing carbon sequestration and promoting conservation of declining life support forest tree species through community participation in Kohima.”
Speaking on the occasion, Keneikrul Noswe, forest range officer of Social Forestry Range, exhorted the students on importance of nature and environment related issues and impressed upon the students to love and care for nature and environments with utmost sincerity. He also encouraged them to plant trees and form an eco-club in the school.
During the session, Keheibamding Thou, senior research associate (NMHS) who is also an international award recipient, spoke on climate change, inequality and conservation. Thou stated that climate change has been caused by rich nations and suffered by poor nations.
In order to minimise the effect, he suggested that both developed and poor nations must start to adopt certain policies and practices to reduce heat trapping emission from the atmosphere. He cautioned that if no such measures were taken at the preliminary stage, we should be prepared to experience major climate catastrophes in the immediate future.
In his short speech, Ruokuovikho Chale, chairman of Kigwema Biodiversity Trust, appealed to the students to conserve God’s given nature to live a good life and play one’s role to promote environment adding that children of tomorrow deserve a good environment to live a good life.
During the programme, hosts of village leaders, school board members, parents and students pledged themselves to be a climate ambassador and assured to participate on any environmental related activities in the school as well in the village.
It mentioned that the school was selected as an Eco club by the department under NMHS project.
