DIMAPUR — Students, teachers, and youth facilitators discussed innovative ideas to strengthen adolescent education during the Global Social Innovation Day celebration themed “How to improve the educational system for adolescents”, organised by Can Youth in collaboration with Herbert Spencer School, Dimapur, on Wednesday.

Addressing the gathering, speaker of the event Kevin Gonmei, education secretary of Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU), emphasised the importance of listening to voices of the adolescents in shaping education policies and encouraged students to take active roles in bringing positive change to society.

He also lauded Can Youth for its efforts in empowering young people and promoting social innovation in schools, according to an update from the Can Youth programme manager on Wednesday.

Zhove Lohe, secretary and director of Can Youth, highlighted the work of the organisation in empowering marginalised children, adolescents and youth through education, skill-building, health awareness, leadership training and addressing social issues such as substance abuse.

Assuring support in nurturing youth-led initiatives, the Can Youth representatives encouraged students to continue developing innovative ideas. They also highlighted the importance of community involvement in enhancing adolescent well-being and improving the education system.

During the extempore speech competition held on topics related to the theme, students shared issues affecting adolescent learners and suggested ways to make education more engaging, supportive and skill-orientated, reflecting the need for activity-based learning, mental health support, a modernised curriculum, stronger teacher–student communication and inclusive classroom practices, said the update.

Students also took part in poster-making and dialogue sessions during the event.
