Gilgal lifts 50th Mongsen Ait Marok Football Trophy
DIMAPUR — Gilgal, which breezed through their quarterfinal and semifinal matches in the 50th edition of the Mongsen Ait Marok Football Trophy at Longjang ground, Mokokchung, won the championship with a 3-0 victory over Yimsen Youth Club-A (YYCA) on Wednesday.
According to a press release, Gilgal began the final match of the tournament with an all-out attack, with centre forward Sentinungsang breaching the YYCA defensive line and scoring three goals in the second, 12th, and 20th minutes of the first half.
The crowd favourite Yimsen Youth Club-A’s valiant efforts in the second half were denied by the Gilgal goalkeeper, resulting in a 3-0 defeat.
Longkhoi (LYA), Ayenmongba (Gilgal), Ngou (LYA), and Homuka (Gilgal) won individual tournament prizes for highest goal scorer, player of the tournament, best defender, and best keeper, respectively. Impangtsung (YYC-B) received the award for the most promising player.
Chutensangba, president of the Mokokchung District Village Development Board Association and special guest at the closing ceremony, encouraged the players on the occasion to push their boundaries for success. He emphasised that stars in various fields are admired for their dedication, a quality that should be both envied and sought after.
He added that winning is not final and that defeat is just another chance to win.
The president also congratulated the club, the Mongsen Ait Club (MAC), on successfully hosting the tournament and providing a platform for the young players.
In his vote of thanks, Bendangyanger, MAC’s sports secretary, thanked the club’s pioneers for planting the seed of the club.
