IMPHAL,February 3
Troops of the 12 Assam Rifles based on specific information regarding smuggling of illegal wildlife products, established a vehicle check post at Khudengthabi in Manipur’s Chandel district and apprehended an individual carrying illegal wildlife product on February 1,according to a press release. The apprehendee was identified as Khundongbam Bashu, a resident of Nongpok Ingkhol under Imphal East district. He was travelling in a Maruti Van (MN-01X-2145) and heading towards Imphal. During the frisking and checking, one Tokay Gecko, approximately worth Rs 2 crores which was tied with a rope and concealed inside a bag which he was carrying was recovered from his possession, the release added. The apprehendee alongwith the recovered item has been handed over to the Forest and Wildlife Department, Imphal.
Best Marching Contingent:The Assam Regiment has been as the Best Marching Contingent amongst the three Services in the Republic Day Parade held on January 26.The contingent comprising of 149 soldiers from the seven states of Northeast India, was led by Lieutenant Aditya Bisht, another separate release said. The impressive victory comes in the beginning of the Platinum Jubilee year of the Assam Regiment.The Assam Regiment was raised on June 15,1941 and draws its troops from the seven North Eastern States. The Regiment’s Insignia, Unihorned Rhinoceros reflects toughness, aggressiveness, determination, and martial qualities,it added. Raised through the Japanese invasion during the Second World War in 1941, this gallant Regiment has won six Battle Honours and Theatre Honour ‘Burma’ in the first three years of its raising. The Fifth Battalion of the Regiment also has the unique distinction of being the only Infantry Battalion to have been awarded Battle Honour in Chhamb Sector during the 1971 Indo-Pak War.Since its raising, The Regiment has been awarded seven Battle Honours, three Theatre Honours, Nine Chief of the Army Staff Unit Citations, 23 Army Commanders Unit Citations, Two United Nations Citations and numerous other gallantry awards.
