NSDMA forecasts fresh rain across Nagaland until August 9, warning of landslides, flash floods and hazardous travel conditions.
DIMAPUR — After a brief lull in rainfall across parts of Nagaland, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has forecast a fresh spell of thunderstorms and rain from Thursday, warning of possible flash floods, landslides, mudslides and waterlogging in vulnerable areas until August 9.
According to the latest district-wise weather outlook issued by the NSDMA, rainfall activity is expected to intensify on August 7, with Longleng, Mokokchung, Peren and Wokha likely to receive comparatively heavier rainfall. Chümoukedima and Dimapur are also expected to experience localised thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rain.
The forecast indicates that Zunheboto could witness the heaviest rainfall during the four-day period on August 8, with moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at scattered locations. Longleng is also likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, while Kiphire, Peren, Tseminyu and Tuensang may experience scattered showers.
On Thursday (August 6), localised thunderstorms with light rain are expected across Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Kohima, Longleng, Mon, Niuland, Noklak, Peren, Phek, Tuensang and Wokha. Tseminyu and Zunheboto are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, while no significant weather activity is forecast for Kiphire and Meluri.
Rainfall is expected to gradually ease on August 9, although Wokha and Peren may continue to receive light to moderate showers, while Kiphire, Mon and Zunheboto could still witness localised thunderstorms.
In view of the forecast, the NSDMA has advised residents of low-lying, foothill and riverine areas to remain vigilant against flooding, waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, mudslides and falling rocks, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution while travelling through hilly and landslide-prone stretches, and the public has been advised to avoid crossing swollen streams and waterlogged roads.
