Dimapur, May 17 (EMN):
Multiple complaints were received from social media users on May 17 about a particular person messaging them from an unknown number claiming to know them and asking to transfer money.

“This person messaged me from a new number pretending to be my friend and asked me to lend some money but after I asked for a photo as proof, the person sent someone else’s photo,” informed a Naga student from Bangalore.

The student said that she found it fishy and posted it on her Instagram account after which numerous people started messaging her that they had also faced the same situation.

Screenshots of the conversations between the scammer and many people were shared across social media platforms, after which it became known that the person was trying to dupe many Nagas.

After further probing and investigation by the victims, they found that the person was a resident of Kohima, but now living in Delhi.

“I have contacted the Naga Students’ Union Bangalore and further they contacted the Naga Students’ Union Delhi,” informed the student.

It was informed that the scammer had also contacted a Naga couple living in the Philippines asking them to transfer an amount while pretending to know them.

“It is scary that this person has our details, contacts and pretends to be known to us,” shared the student.

Many Nagas in Delhi further alleged that the scammer works in a call centre and has a child.

After the Dimapur police was informed about the news, an official told Eastern Mirror that her number was traced to Delhi and found that she has been trying to swindle many young Nagas living in Bangalore, Delhi, Kohima and Dimapur.

This newspaper contacted the alleged scammer with the number provided by one of the victims. The person admitted that she has tried to scam many people but has not received or taken any money as the victims came to know that she was trying to cheat them.

“I was in need of money so I did that, I am sorry as I realise now,” said the person and claimed that she was not part of any group or team scamming people.

She further claimed that she has been residing in Guwahati for the last two months and has a child but separated from her husband.

“I admit I made a mistake and now everyone knows it’s me since they have posted on their Instagram accounts,” she said.

The Dimapur police informed that further investigation is in the process.
