Four file nomination for Hiyanglam by poll

FOUR candidates have submitted their nomination today at Returning Officer Thoubal district for the Hiyanglam By Election which is scheduled to be held on October 17 next. The last day of filing nomination papers will be tomorrow and Scrutiny and withdrawal of nomination has been fixed on September 29 and October 1 respectively.
Those who filed their nomination papers for the forthcoming by-poll include Maibam Dhanabir Singh of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Mayengbam Amutombi of Manipur People’s Party (MPP), Elengbam Dwijamani of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee and Dr Y Radheshyam of Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress Committee. Maibam Dhanabir who is son of former MLA M Kunjo. Hiyanglam seat was left vacant after sitting MLA Maibam Kunjo of Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress Committee (PMTCC) passed away recently.

Manipur police commando was shot dead
Meanwhile, in an unfortunate incident, a driver of Manipur police commando was shot dead after he was abducted at gun point along with a bullet proof police jeep ‘Rakshak’ (MN04-1519) in Manipur Thursday night.
The incident took place when an unidentified gunman who was later identified personnel of 6th Indian Reserve Battalion in civil dress fired some rounds towards a police team near PCTC oil pump located at DM College gate in Imphal around 8.30 pm.
Subsequently police also retaliated but he managed to escape after hijacking the police jeep Rakshak along with police commando driver E Joy (35)at gun point.
In the follow up manhunt, police commandoes discovered the jeep which was abandoned along with the dead body of the driver near Khetrigao Sabal Leikai in Imphal East after about an hour.
On the following day (Friday), police managed to identify unidentified gunman as one Thangkhensong, a resident of Vengnuam Veng, Churachanpur district and a rifleman of 6th IRB and presently attached at the security escort team of MLA Dr Chaltolien Amo. The gunman also took away the 9mm pistol of the the police driver while he left an mp5 gun inside the vehicle, source added.
Police have registered a case and they’re looking for the absconding personnel as he is now at large.
Meanwhile the last rites of the driver was held with military honour by a team of 1st Manipur Rifles team at his birth place Samurou Mamang Leikai after autopsy was conducted at a hospital morgue in Imphal and ,reports added.
