Former minister, CPI leader dies

IMPHAL, March 6

Former minister and a prominent leader of the CommunistParty of India (CIP) Pheiroijam Parijat died in Imphal today after a prolong illness. He was 72. Parijat, who was bed ridden after a severe Blood Pressure (BP) stroke around a year back breathed his last early this morning at his residence at Nongada village in Imphal East district.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters. Upon learning of Parijat’s death, many prominent leaders including state chief minister O Ibobi Singh, Manipur BJP president Th Chaoba, MLA of Lamlai Assembly constituency Ksh Biren and state CPI leaders rushed to his home.
While sharing his shock with the family of the bereaved family of former minister, Ibobi said that Parijat was a man of principal who always committed to his work.
The lifeless body of the veteran communist leader was kept at the Irawat Park at Tellou Chana of Imphal East where floral tributes were offered by people before performing his last rites.
The last rites were performed there this afternoon.
Pheiriojam Parijat was member of the Manipur Legislative Assembly for six terms since he was first elected from Lamlai Assembly Constituency of Imphal East district in 1972 on CPI ticket.
He was minister of power, health, education, agriculture, labour etc. during the first two term of the Ibobi led Congress-CPI coalition SPF government.
Parijat joined the CPI in the year 1964 and was member of the national executive committee of the party. He was born on June 7, 1943.
