Former Manipur Youth Affairs and Sports minister passes away

Imphal, Jan.3 (EMN): Former Manipur Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Aza A Shimray passed away on Sunday morning on the way to district hospital in Ukhrul district headquarters following an illness. He was 80 years old and is survived by his wife and four daughters.

Aza was at his native village-Chingjaroi CV for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

He was elected for the first time as a Congress MLA in 2002 from Chingai Assembly Constituency in Ukhrul district and became the Youth Affairs and Sports minister. 

Prior to joining politics, he served in various capacities as teacher, headmaster, zonal educational officer, Joint Director, Education dept(S) till he took voluntary retirement from service in 2001. 

He also served as chairman, district-level officers, Ukhrul; secretary, All Manipur Education Directorate (s) Officers Forum, Advisor Raphei Katamnao Long and Joint Secretary, Tangkhul Students Union Imphal, among others.
