Former Manipur minister passes away

IMPHAL — Former Manipur minister of Cooperation, Arts and Culture, Tongbram Mangibabu Singh, who is also a Congress leader, passed away on October 11. He was 75.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.

Mangibabu was first elected as a member of the 6th Manipur Legislative Assembly in 1995 on Janata Dal ticket from Thanga Assembly Constituency. He also served as the general secretary of the Janata Dal, Manipur.

In 1996, he resigned from Janata Dal and joined the Indian National Congress (INC) and served as the deputy chairman of the State Planning Board in the Congress government.

In 2007, he was elected to the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly from Thanga Constituency on Congress ticket and served as the chief whip. In 2012, he was again elected to the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly from the same Constituency on a Congress ticket.

He also served as the working president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee and he was even jailed for taking part in the demand for Manipur’s statehood during 1968-69.

He was born in 1948 at Moirangkhunou under Thanga Assembly Constituency, Bishnupur district.
