Forest minister inaugurates public park in Mon town

DIMAPUR — Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and Village Guards, CL John, inaugurated a public park-cum-botanical garden in Forest Colony of Mon town on November 25. The public park-cum-botanical garden was developed by Mon forest division.

Speaking at the inaugural programme, John has appreciated the efforts of Mon forest division for coming up with innovative idea as there is no park in Mon town till date. He encouraged extending the public park and botanical garden in coming days, an update from Mon forest division stated.

Pointing out the uniqueness of the state in which more than 90% land are privately owned, he stated that sometimes it become difficult to implement development activities. He, therefore, requested all wards representatives to come forward and cooperate with government departments through land donation for more of such parks in other parts of Mon town.

While highlighting the challenges faced by department in conserving forest and wildlife, he called upon the people to avoid hunting of wild animals. He also encouraged the children to use such parks as a platform to learn and grow physically and mentally as well for recreational purposes.

In his welcome address, Rajesh Kumar, DFO Mon, acknowledged the efforts of division officials and staffs for their sincere works during the development of the park.

Kaihong Konyak, UDA Mon, requested the minister to provide urgent infrastructure requirement in the colony, while Chingam Konyak, Head GB of Wagiem Ward, assured to cooperate and collaborate with Forest department in keeping and maintaining the public park as it falls under its ward.

Ponglem Konyak, president of Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK), encouraged members of various wards, organisations, administration and other bodies to contribute for gradual upgradation of the public park.

Meanwhile, Temjennaro Longkumer, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) and administrator of Mon Town Council (MTC), encouraged all individuals to plant more trees to combat climate change. She also emphasised on cleanliness and encouraged the residents of Mon town to adopt healthy life style.

The programme concluded with ceremonial plantation of tree saplings by all the dignitaries inside the park.
