KOHIMA — Kohima got a facelift on Thursday with the inauguration of ‘Vertical Garden’ consisting of 600 flower pots along the 750 meter footpath stretching from Classic Island Junction to Box Cutting Junction in Kohima under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).

The ‘Vertical Garden’ was an initiative of Kohima Forest Division. The facility was inaugurated by Dharmendra Prakash, principal chief conservator of Forests and head of Forest Force, department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

The activity under the NCAP allocated to the department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, included creating green cover, of which urban greening with vertical garden was one of its components. The emphasis was to mitigate air pollution by planting air purifier plants to eliminate the air pollutants.

Addressing the inaugural programme, Prakash said the average respiratory index in Nagaland is 30 to 35, which goes up to maximum of 40.

Pointing out the uniqueness of the Forest department, he said it supplements the jobs taken care of by God, unlike other departments. He stated that whatever contributions they make would be remembered by generations to come.

The official appealed to the members to ensure that flowers are maintained and taken care of. He added that the initiative was the beginning and expressed hope for bigger things to come in the days to come.

Meanwhile, it was reported that some miscreants had stolen some flower pots and uprooted flowers from the pots during the setting up process. Besides stealing, miscreants also uprooted the flowers, which were found lying on the pavement.
