The Nagaland Foothill Road Construction Committee (NFRCC) has expressed confidence that the first phase of works would kick-start in the month of December, most probably from Wokha sector.Earlier the NFRCC had set October as the target month to commence the project. The two months, and running, delay in kicking off the construction works has been attributed to “technical” roadblocks. The NFRCC on Saturday decided to meet the officials of PWD (Roads and Bridges) “in the next day or two” to discuss the “commencement of construction works and to finalize the necessary formalities.” During the meeting, which lasted for almost three hours, the NFRCC also resolved that none of its members would be allowed to bid for tenders, in connection with the Nagaland Foothill Road project, “under any circumstances.”
“Our duty is to act as supervisors and ensure quality works,” as one of the NFRCC members put.
Further, the meeting resolved that it would abide by its decision to share the contract works among all its ten constituent tribes.
The foothill road will enable commuters in Nagaland after 50 years of statehood to circumvent the road on the Mariani-Amguri sector in Assam. It will ensure that frequent lightning bandh calls in Assam does not affect movement for the people of the state and also reduce the cost of travel.
