A new state level football tourney under the banner ‘Captain Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament’ will begin from November 23 till November 30.
The tournament will be organized by the Inspector General Assam Rifles (North) under the aegis of Headquarter 3 Corps and will be a yearly event from 2015 onwards in honour of Captain (Late) Kenguruse, MVC, who attained martyrdom during Operation Vijay in 2001.
According to the Assam Rifles, the tournament is aimed at fusing the indomitable Naga spirit with the passion of youth for football so that the young sporting talent of the state could get an avenue to rise and shine as professional footballers.
The tournament, approved by the Nagaland Football Association (NFA), endeavours to provide a statewide participation, wherein each district will be represented by two teams and will contain a rolling Silver Trophy for the winners and cash prizes totalling upto Rs.5 lakhs. Individual awards such as Best Player, Golden Boot and Best Custodian will also be included, it was stated.Captain Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament will be conducted every year in the name of the gallant hero who has carved a niche in the history of Nagaland. With the support of the NFA, the Sport Ministry of the government of Nagaland and above all, the people of Nagaland, the tournament is expected to become a premier one in the state.
“Youth empowerment has always been the focus of Assam Rifles, and this initiative is one among the many efforts being made by the IGAR (N) to empower and promote the talented youth of the state,” the release said.
The tournament will take place in four venues- Kohima, Tsiesema, Zhadima and Chiephobozou. 24 teams including two government teams, Assam Rifles and the DGP teams are expected to play in the tournament. The Assam Rifles team, if they win the trophy, is informed that it will pass on the prize money to the other teams.
