Imphal, Nov. 9 (EMN): In a move to bring forth the importance and awareness of the indigenous and endangered species, a five day ‘flower show’ was inaugurated at Ukhrul town, 80km north east of Imphal on Wednesday.
The event which is being held with the motto “Nourish to Flourish”, is creative, colourful and musical and is organised by Ukhrul Flower Society in collaboration with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra Ukhrul.
Inaugurating the festival, DIG Manipur Police IK Muivah encouraged the flower farmers to cultivate flowers that has commercial values. He also called for more researches to explore the medicinal values of the different flower species in the district as well as the other aromatic plants found in abundance at the district. Floriculture has immense potential to generate handsome income for the florists as well as add to the per capita income of the State.
Florists represents churches, localities, organizations, societies and activists.
It displayed floral designs, ornamental miniatures, hanging baskets, orchids, horticulture specimen, indigenous and exotic varieties.
Horticulturists shared their knowledge of floriculture while the locals participated in the show with great enthusiasm. A souvenir was also released in connection with the inaugural function.
Meanwhile informing that everything from an art festival to a garden flower adorned the show, PRO Assam Rifles (South) in its release issued here said that Assam Rifles associating itself with the local people of Ukhrul supported the creative talent and provided a platform to promote them so that they can be nurtured for a better future.
The prize distribution ceremony will be held on Nov. 12, where individual winners and organisations will be felicitated. The competition will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 50,000 for first prize, Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000 for second and third respectively.
