IMPHAL, September 18:Flash flood was reported in Manipur’s Churachandpur town, about 65 km south of Imphal, soon after an hour-long heavy downpour in the hill town around 1 pm on Sunday. However, the flood/rain water receded after the rain stopped, in the afternoon.
The residents attributed the sudden flash flood in the town to unabated encroachment along the river banks and lack of proper drainage systems.

AMSU to ban Coca-Cola soft drinks
All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) on Sunday announced to ban sale and consumption of Coca-Cola soft drinks in Manipur for alleged tempering of manufacturing dates of its products until justice is done under Consumers Protection Act 1986 and Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.
Announcing this during a press conference here, AMSU secretary general Manjit Sarangthem expressed unhappiness over the indifferent attitude of the departments concerned of the state government.
“We will be requesting the central authority to look into the matter seriously,” he said and appealed to everyone, including the Coca-Cola dealers or agents here, to stop their usual activities until the justice is done.
Ibobi opens open heart surgery facility
Manipur can be developed as a destination of medical tourism considering the world class medical facilities available here, said Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh.
“One cannot wait for time and money to start education and treatment for diseases,” Ibobi said while speaking at the formal launching function of the state’s first open heart surgery at the Sky Hospital & Research Centre, RIMS Road, in Imphal.
In his keynote address, chairman of Sky Hospital Dr Shyamkishore said patients from Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and neighbouring country Myanmar come here for treatment. Now any kind of open heart surgery, by-pass surgery and closed heart surgery can be performed here, he added.
Earlier, the Chief Minister, accompanied by Health Minister DK Korungthang, Chief Secretary O Nabakishore Singh and Commissioner of Health PK Singh, visited the Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) Operation Theatre Complex of the hospital.
