IMPHAL, December 19
Five rocket shells and one High Explosive (HE) grenade were recovered from the bed of Kangla moat in the heart of Imphal city early today.
The explosives were found by some labourers being engaged in the renovation work of the moat at about 8 am. Last September, six grenades were recovered by labourers near the site while digging the moat.
Kangla Fort, the ancient capital of Manipur, is surrounded by Kanglapat (moat). The fort was formerly occupied by the Assam Rifles for decades. It was the centre of the paramilitary force from where it was handling the militancy in Manipur which was used to be the most-insurgency affected state.
A bomb disposal team of Manipur Police retrieved the explosives and safely detonated in Lamphal area, some 5 km from the site.
