Kohima, 26 Sep. (EMN): The 1st Ranking Snooker Tournament organised by Cue Association of Nagaland (CAN) got underway at Club Area 51 in Jail Colony on Thursday in Kohima.
A total of 40 players from Kohima and Dimapur districts have registered for the three-day tournament and the winners are decided on ‘best of three’ knockout basis. 32 players were through to the second round after winning on the opening day of the tournament.
Earlier during the opening ceremony, president of CAN Yanger Temjen stated in his welcome address that the association had deliberated on the need to conduct the tournament to push the sport to professionalism level and bring competitive spirit which is necessary to win in big competitions.
“Today, we lay the foundation of this all-important milestone for the players and those who love the game and for those who support any sports and want to elevate the level of professionalism in sports in the state,” he said.
The presient urged both the members of the association and players to understand their responsibilities in making the maiden and first event a success and carry it forward with a progressive mindset. He also reminded them to maintain punctuality and sportsmanship.
