Dimapur, April 2 (EMN): Fire and Emergency Service on Thursday averted a possible disaster by dousing a jungle fire which broke out at Nagaland University, Meriema Campus.

A press release from the Fire Services stated that on receiving information of jungle fire at Nagaland University, it mobilised a quick response team under commander ASI Neitho-u Keditsu and managed to put the fire under control and prevented from spreading to the adjoining areas.

It stated that few acres of forest was destroyed in the fire.

In a related incident, Fire Station in Wokha managed to contain jungle fire at WTC garbage dumping area along Merapani road at Wokha town on April 2.

The fire was suspected to have originated from the dumping site before spreading further to the adjoining forest/jungle.

Meanwhile, Nagaland University Students’ Union (NUSU), Kohima Campus, has urged the citizens to refrain from burning anything in the forest as well as in and around the campus.

The union, in a press release issued by its president Rhilo Mero, stated that the recent fire incident almost claimed lives and properties including two hostels, residences and quarters nearby.

The union also requested public vehicles to refrain from entering the Nagaland University road unless essential as a precautionary measure to fight off the novel coronavirus and incidents of forest fire.

Meanwhile, the union has thanked the department of Fire Services and all those who helped in preventing any damage by the fire which broke out near the hostel and guest houses. It further urged the government to issue more stringent regulations for the safety of all.
