DIMAPUR — A major fire broke out at Railway Colony in Dimapur on Thursday, razing 16 houses. However, no casualties were reported.

The duty commandant at the Central Fire Station, Neiphretuo  Angami, informed that a distress call was received around 12:24 pm on Thursday, following which five fire tenders including two from West Fire Station were deployed.

It took them nearly two hours to douse the fire.

The official said that as per the registry of house owners, a total of 16 houses — 13 thatched houses and three concrete houses — were razed in the inferno.

Despite the efforts of the Fire personnel, nothing could be salvaged from the 13 thatched houses. It was informed that at least four LPG cylinders exploded before the fire tenders arrived, while eight cylinders were retrieved from the houses, preventing further explosions and damaged.

An estimated value of the damaged property has not been ascertained yet, said the officer, adding that the fire was suspected to be caused by an electrical short circuit.
