Massive fire claims one life, renders 900 homeless in Dimapur
Dimapur: One person died in a massive fire that broke out in Dimapur on Sunday afternoon. Central Fire Station Dimapur duty commander, Neiphretuo Angami informed Eastern Mirror that the fire, which broke out at East Block Colony, Burma camp, claimed the life of an 85-year-old differently-able woman.
He said they received a call about the fire at approximately 12:09 pm, and reached the scene by 12:18 pm.
It took about two hours and 50 minutes for the fire tenders to extinguish the flames, the officer said.
He further informed that the Central Fire Station deployed four fire tenders, 10 refills, while two fire tenders came from West Fire Station and one from Chumoükedima Fire Station.
Angami informed that the unexpected fire resulted in the destruction of approximately 260 thatched houses, leaving about 900 individuals homeless. The extent of the property damage and the reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained, he said.
Gaonbura of East Block Colony, Burma camp, Rangomhau updated that the fire outbreak occurred at approximately 11:40 am. According to him, the cause of the fire is suspected to be from a kitchen while cooking in one of the houses, although the exact cause is still under investigation.
Rangomhau also mentioned that the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has provided relief supplies to the affected families.
