DIMAPUR — An Assam-type house within the St. Stephen’s Higher Secondary School premises in Industrial Village Razüphe, Dimapur was destroyed in a fire on Sunday. The house reportedly comprised of six unused classrooms.

The Central Fire Station, Dimapur received a distress call at around 3:18 pm and fire personnel along with two fire tenders from the Central and West Fire stations were immediately dispatched. ASI G. Niamlungpou Gonmei informed that the fire was contained within 40 minutes.

Since there was no electricity at the time of the incident, it is suspected that the fire was caused due to a malfunction of the power generator, he said.

The official informed that the one of the rooms in the house was utilised as a storeroom. While the fire tenders were promptly mobilised and managed to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding areas, the ceiling and roof of three rooms collapsed due to the fire and there was significant damage to the roof and ceiling of remaining rooms.

An assessment of the property loss is pending. No casualties were reported.
