Mr. Modi took off with the slogans Achche din and Make in India 365 days ago after coming to power on the strength of incumbency wave. He made high-sounding promises which indeed propelled sky high expectations for the hoi polloi. This global trotting (visited 18 countries in 12 months) Modi continues to be the centre of attention even though delivery has been lackluster. Though his critics say Modi’s hypocrisy is thick, and his arguments are thin it is too early to write him off at the moment. Thanks to his efficient stage management team, Mr. Modi is marketing himself very well so far by doing things what the scam ridden previous UPA government did not touch or vice versa. In the Northeast India region context, Mr. Modi is an item of fear and hope. The mercurial National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government under Narendra Modi is a mixed bag for the people of the region because a strong apprehension that saffronisation is going to be massive and speedy, has really disturbed the people. In the flip side of thing the people of the region also feel sanguine that development will come and the long standing insurgency issue plaguing the region will be resolved.
It is true the Hindu nationalists are becoming very vocal after Narendra Modi occupied the Kursi. It is also true that the attention and focus of New Delhi are more intense on the neglected Northeast region during the Modi regime. For the first time on record, a Prime Minister had stayed four days consecutively in the region touring and meeting people. We have also witnessed that almost all the Union ministers of the NDA government under Mr. Modi have visited this region, with some of them several times, in their first year reigning.
But what is hurting? The BJP’s pro-Hindu slant. Cow slaughter banning, declaring December 25 (Christmas Day) as Good Governance Day, proposal of Bhagwad Gita as national scripture and several other activities of the Saffron forces are indeed exacerbating the atmosphere.
