[dropcap]I[/dropcap]f a home minister says that he came to know about the highly charged atmosphere pertaining to mob in his state one day late then definitely the higher authority should take note of it on urgent vein to arrest the faulty system of governance.
We may not say the administration was not bothered to take advantage of modern communication system for its operation. But we may ask whether Nagaland government is still enjoying the postal service (mailing of information in hard copies) to exchange information in this fast moving world powered by high tech-gadgets and cyber networks. The road to the March 5 gory episode actually started from the previous day. On March 4 the mob fury was sweeping the state’s commercial hub which has the potential of destabilizing the entire region but this information reached the state’s home minister only the following day. This was disclosed by the home minister himself to the journalists. We appreciate the home minister for this confession but let us give thumps down to the home department which he heads for the irresponsibility, insensitivity, ignorance of situation and inefficiency.
Throughout March 4 thousands of people were taking their ire to the streets. They were baying for the blood of the alleged rapist Sayed Sarid Khan. Cases of widespread vandalizing of properties were also witnessed. Even 24 hours later there was no sign of the administration pulling up its loin to contain the situation. The mob continued to have their way on the second day. The police and other security agencies remained mute.
The case of laxity of the Home department is one issue that should not be taken lightly by the higher authority. Social issues are getting complex with time and the people in the helm should be responsible and sensible enough to rise to the occasion.
Today the reasons put forward by the state government why the March 5 incident could not be prevented, have been called into question.
