Farmers trained on scientific beekeeping

DIMAPUR — The All India Coordinated Research Project on Honey Bees and Pollinators (AICRP-HB&P) under School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema campus, conducted a one-day training programme on ‘Scientific meliponiculture and apiculture’ in Tseminyu New Town on December 7.

An update from SAS: NU stated that Dr. Avinash Chauhan, principal investigator of AICRP (HB&P)-cum-nodal officer for stingless bees, enlightened on the different aspects of beekeeping during the technical session. He also highlighted the importance of bees for diversity conservation as well as on quality management for bees and their products.

Dr. Chauhan also deliberated on development biology, social organisation, quality management in meliponiculture and apiculture where mass queen production and bee hive products were discussed comprehensively and the importance of value additions, marketing, etc.

Logubu, ward-2 chairman of Tseminyu town and special guest, emphasised on different roles played by bees in maintenance of ecosystem and the different products derived from bees. He appealed to conserve all kinds of bees for a greater cause and requested the farmers to be committed in gaining more knowledge from the training.

In the second session, Lily Tep, apitherapist from Terogvunyu, urged farmers to incorporate modern technology to hone their skills in productive beekeeping. She spoke on the importance of bees in curing various ailments and delivered a detailed explanation on the therapy.

Ngukho, bee professional of AICRP (HB&P), elaborated on the vital role of bees in pollination and further discussed the advantages of scientific beekeeping.

On behalf of the trainees, Hanchulo Jemu, acknowledged the organisers from AICRP (HB&P) ICAR, SAS, NU, Medziphema, for the successful initiative undertaken in the district.

The training concluded with distribution of beekeeping equipments, certificates and practical sessions where demonstrations were conducted by Lily Tep, Dr. Chauhan, and Ngukho.

A total of 67 beekeepers from seven ranges of Tseminyu district attended the programme.
