Farmers trained in scientific methods of farming winter crops

Dimapur, Nov. 12 (EMN): The All India Coordinated Research Projects for vegetable crops (AICRP) of the School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development hosted a training programme for farmers focusing on the area of scientific cultivation of winter vegetable crops, at Zhuikhu in Medziphema in Dimapur, a press release from the organisers informed on Monday.
The event was to highlight to the farmers the importance of packaging practices and plant protection in vegetable production; and to make the farmers know about the ‘benefits and advantages of growing vegetable crops,’ the updates stated.
Another objective was to educate the farming community about pests and diseases, which they might encounter during cropping seasons; and to manage the pests and disease with eco-friendly tactics. Further, the farmers were educated about important ‘natural enemies’ or ‘farmers’ friends,’ and how to identify and preserve them in the fields, the updates stated.
A discourse during a technical session on the subject of scientific cultivation of winter vegetable crops, was delivered by Ashwini Ananda, a Ph.D schlolar at SASRD; and a discourse about pest management of winter vegetable crops was delivered by Otto Awomi, Ph.D scholar, dept. of Entomology.
During the second technical session, which focused on the subject of disease management of winter vegetable crops, Dr. Pezangulie Chakruno, pathologist at AICRP on Soybean gave a discourse on said subject matter, the updates informed.
The organisers informed that about 63 farmers attended the training event.
The programme also had Prof. Akali Sema of AICRP who was said to have ‘highlighted the importance of vegetables’ to the farmers and what vegetables can be grown successfully in a village with hilly topography like Zhuikhu.
In the concluding session folders and seeds of winter vegetable crops were distributed, the organisers informed.
