Dimapur, Feb. 2 (EMN): Farmers of Beisumpuikam and neighbouring villages in Peren district were sensitised on Toria variety TS 67, a short duration high yielding rapeseed variety, and encouraged them to cultivate the crop in order to enhance their income.
Farmers were encouraged to cultivate Toria variety TS 67 during a field day-cum-farmer-scientist interaction programme organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren, under ICAR Research Complex for NER, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema, in collaboration with ATMA Peren at Beisumpuikam on January 29.
A press release from KVK Peren stated that Toria variety TS 67 was developed by Assam Agriculture University (AAU), Shillongani, Assam, and taken up for frontline demonstration by KVK in farmers field.
It stated that the theme of field day was shared by Z James Kikon, while the duties and responsibilities of successful farmers was shared by Akam Zeliang, DPD, ATMA Peren. Zeliang also exhorted the farmers on the need for planning, knowledge of land and soil status for cultivating the suitable crop and to maintain record of all their expenditures and incomes to calculate profit and loss.
Speaking on the occasion, the village council chairman Tadibe Zeliang informed that Beisumpuikam village annually produces 1000 tonnes of rice, 62 tonnes of sesame, 20 tonnes of colocasia besides other vegetable and 42-45 tonnes of Toria and mustard. He added that the Toria variety TS 67 is doing well in the village.
Special guest and DAO, Peren, Sanizo Nienu spoke on different farming methods to increase production. He also stressed on dignity of labour, management of time and resources and cautioned them to maintain work culture even in their respective fields.
During an interaction programme, council chairmen of other villages, farmers, youth leaders including women farmers shared their observations and views regarding different crops, training programmes on capacity building and practical demonstrations conducted as well as to be taken up in future.
Farmers were also taken to the field to see the performance of the TS Toria variety. Altogether, 75 farmers attended the programme.
