Family donates barking deer to Nagaland Zoological Park

In a paradigm shift from hunting wildlife for consumption towards its conservation, a Naga family donated a barking deer to the Nagaland Zoological Park (NZP) in Dimapur on July 22. This was informed by Dr. Prabhat Kumar, NZP director.

Speaking to Eastern Mirror, Kumar informed that an adult male barking deer was brought into the NZP after a family residing in Dimapur decided to donate it. Kumar shared that many people are being sensitised towards conserving wildlife at this juncture in Nagaland and are coming forward to donate different varieties of animals.

“I am happy to see that times are changing as more and more people are beginning to be aware of wildlife conservation,” said Kumar.
He informed that the family had kept the deer with them for sometime and voluntarily decided to donate to the zoo. The barking deer, fondly called ‘Gholu’ was informed to be successfully rehabilitated at the zoo in Rangapahar, Kumar informed adding that the barking deer is an important species of the deer family.

Further, Kumar has appreciated Toishe Zhimo of Naharbari village and Anato Swu for the donation. The zoo authorities have also expressed happiness over the increased level of awareness among people of Nagaland in conserving wildlife.
