Kohima, June 23 (EMN): One person was shot dead outside Mialhoü Solo complex near Y-Junction in Kohima on Tuesday while he was reportedly extorting money, with an accomplice, on behalf of a Naga group in Old NST area.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SP) Kohima, Kevithuto Sophie informed journalists at his office chamber that an anti-extortion team, while on surveillance, received report of the extortion.
Sophie stated that the anti-extortion team approached them (extortionist) to stop and surrender; but instead they reportedly started running away. “One was overpowered and the other was cornered,” he said
He stated that a pistol was seized from the possession of the one who was overpowered.
It was informed that the other miscreant who was cornered, seeing his friend being “neutralised”, became aggressive and confronted the officer, and tried to snatch the loaded pistol from him.
During the scuffle, the gun fired; hitting the miscreant on the left side of the neck. It proved fatal.
The deceased has been identified as Khehuto I Assumi, aged 35. As per preliminary report, he was reportedly serving as Lance Havildar in 164 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army), before being discharged on medical grounds in 2019.
His accomplice, identified as Aito Aomi (25), was arrested and taken into custody.
The police recovered one .32 mm pistol along with one magazine and one live round, among other items.
Later, the police also raided the house of the deceased and recovered several assorted fired bullet heads and pellets, it was informed.
