Extortion: Citizens’ forum want authorities to start doing their job

Dimapur, Sep. 25 (EMN): The Dimapur District Citizens’ Forum (DDCF) has said that the formation of the public action committee (PAC), of the Naga Council of Dimapur, shows the failure of the government authorities in curbing extortion activities currently being carried out by various groups in Dimapur.

The forum issued a press release to the media on Wednesday stating its displeasure at the extortion activities.

‘The DDCF would like to express our deep concern to the prevailing exorbitant taxation pandemic in and around Dimapur. It is quite a situation of shock for the public to have to come through the publications in the local newspapers about all the illegal taxations by the state and as well as the non-state collectors,’ the press release stated.

‘DDCF would like to question the concerned authority(s) as to how such illegal collections are happening in broad daylight, thereby giving a bad picture/image to Dimapur. The formation of public action committee by the citizens of Dimapur is in one way a very big shame for the government, as it clearly shows the failure of the government to contain such illegal activities which is the root cause of peoples’ suffering.’

The authorities should therefore look into the representations submitted by the PAC and implement it immediately, the forum stated.

The DDCF has lauded the PAC for its noble cause and for taking the initiative for the welfare of the people.

‘We appeal al the citizens of Dimapur to come out and support the PAC in its endeavour and strengthen the PAC for a better and progressive Dimapur,’ the forum added.
