Experts from CGIAR centres with scientists at ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema on August 1.[/caption]
Dimapur, Aug. 2 (EMN): A team of experts from Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) centres visited ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, Nagaland on August 1 to discuss the opportunity for providing technical support associated with livestock component for the project FOCUS in Nagaland which is supported by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
The delegation includes Dr. Habirar Rahman, ILRI regional representative, South Asia, and former Deputy Director General (Animal Science); Dr. V. P. Singh, Regional Representative for South Asia, CIAT; and Dr. U. S. Singh, South Asia regional coordinator and India country representative, CIP, informed a press release from Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Director of ICAR- National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema.
Mitra briefed the delegation about the institute’s activities as well as the prospect of mithun farming in North-Eastern hilly states including Nagaland.
Mithun, though primarily reared as a meat animal, has tremendous potential for providing livelihoods to the region and can be diversified as a source of milk, draught power, and leather, informed the update.
The team of experts also visited the institute’s mithun farm and witnessed the semi-intensive mithun rearing being practiced. Mithun milk, which contains as high as 8-10% fat, was also offered to the visiting dignitaries.
The visit was coordinated by Dr. Auto V, department of Veterinary & AH, government of Nagaland and Dr. Stephen S Hanah, Scientist of ICAR-NRCM.
