- IMPHAL — In an
effort to mitigate climate crisis, wildlife experts and officials of Wetland
Development Authority in Manipur have stressed on urgent need to conserve
environment in the state.
- The officials made this comment during a day-long awareness
programme on the conservation of birds held at the Inland Water Transport
Complex in Sendra, 45 km south of Imphal near Moirang township in Manipur s
Bishnupur district on Sunday.
- Speaking on the occasion, the project director of Loktak
Development Authority, Ngangom Sanajaoba Meitei, underlined that protecting the
avian population is integral to safeguarding wetlands and called upon all
stakeholders to act as guardians of the environment and biodiversity.

- On the other hand, chairman of technical committee of state
wetlands authority, Dr. Khangembam Shamungou, stressed on the importance of
minimising disturbances to water birds during boating activities. Shamungou,
who is also the president of Manipur Bird Club,
urged tourist guides at Loktak lake to deepen their knowledge of Lake's
water bird species and share the information effectively with visitors to
enhance eco-awareness.
- In the day's event, bird expert and former principal of
Kumbi College, K Jugeshor, spoke on "Identification of birds: Issues and
challenges," wherein he highlighted the importance of bird conservation
and the obstacles faced in protecting avian biodiversity.
- An interaction session was also held with members of the
Loktak Lake Tourism Development Cooperative Society, focusing on their crucial
role and responsibilities in conserving water birds alongside offering quality
experiences to tourists.
- Following the awareness session, an annual general body
meeting of the Manipur Bird Club (MBC) was also organized, where its members unanimously
resolved to prioritise conservation of Manipur’s avian heritage and outlined
various action plans for the year ahead.
- The Manipur Bird Club (MBC) has affirmed commitment to
strengthen bird conservation efforts and promoting sustainable eco-tourism at
Loktak Lake and across the state.
