Excise revenue declined after dry law — Report

The state’s department of Excise and Prohibition collected revenue of INR 280.76 lakh on Excise duty and license fee from April 2019 to January 2020, and a fine amount of INR 25.59 lakh from April 2019 to December 2019.

This information was contained in the department’s annual administrative report 2019-20.

“Since the introduction of Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act 1989, revenue earning of the department has been reduced drastically,” the report read.

According to the revenue receipt of the department, in 1987-88, the department collected INR 584.37 lakh; in 1988-89, it was INR 550.90 lakh; and in 2019-20, INR 250.98 lakh. (See table)

According to the department’s achievement report from April 2019 to October 2019, it seized items worth INR 90 lakh in market value.

The department is in possession of forty-seven .303 rifle and seventeen Sten guns along with a sufficient number of ammunitions.
