Dimapur, December 9

Christmas always come early in Dimapur. Almost every households starts hanging stars by mid-November and Christmas carols are the most common theme in the air. And it is also the season when Nagas starts loosening their purse strings in exchange for “family fun.” One such initiative, to enable families to indulge in some “Christmas fun,” got underway here today at Agri Expo site in Dimapur. Called the “Christmas Carnival”, the event is the brainchild of a group of local youth by the name of Definitive Inc.
Dotted across the sprawling Agri Expo site, around 80 different stalls, according to the organizers’ estimate, opened to cater to the participants’ choice of revelry. Majority of the stalls are food stalls.
Dishes of varied tastes, ranging from bamboo shoots to axone to anishi and even Khasi dishes are available. The major attraction on day one was, however, the “Home Made Wine” stall. Wine made from grapes, cranberry, guava and pineapple were drained to the lees within no time even as visitors continued to throng the stall.
Other attractions include Halloween costumes, accessories, handicrafts, computer games and pastries section. Rollercoaster rides and other “fun games” have been set up in a separate section, for the kids especially. There are no entry charges.
One major dampener however, according to the organizers, has been the erratic power supply. Even those in-charge of the stalls complained that they have been left feeling “alchi” ( defeated) by the constant power cuts.
As one of the visitors to the stall remarked: “Eman andhera dey kenika sabo?” (How can one even see in this darkness?) Save for the frequent flights into pitch darkness, the visitors expressed pleasure at the idea and the initiative of the “Christmas Carnival.”
