The Eastern Naga Students Federation (ENSF) while strongly condemning the February 6 incident of Chingmelen village and Tuensang Town which resulted in the loss of two innocent precious lives, has expressed its regret that had the government immediately implemented the ENPO Peace Committee’s recommendation of the ‘Longkhim Peace Agreement’ signed on January 21, 2015, then the turmoil and intense situation could have been prevented. The statement of the ENSF said the federation while trying to bring an understanding between the two villages since last November had learnt that both the villages expressed displeasure over administration as there was a lack of timely intervention on the matter and moreover justice was delayed. “Further, when any issue arises in the District, the responsibilities were shifted to the Tribal Organizations. So, on Deccember 13, 2014 when the state Cabinet made their visit to Tuensang district ENSF questioned the state government as to who is suppose to run the district whether the tribal, students or the government and that the government should go back if it cannot run the district,” it pointed out.
In order to substantiate on the issue, Peace Committee was constituted at Longleng on January 12, 2015 with special assignment to enquire into the ongoing tense situation at Tuensang. As per the need of the situation the Peace committee have been touring the entire affected areas since January 17, 2015 and thus resulted in the signing of ‘Longkhim Peace Agreement’ on January 21, 2015 by all the parties after thorough study on the issue so as to bring Peace in the district.
“Thereafter, on the evening of January 21, 2015 the committee submitted a letter of recommendations to the authority concerned for immediate necessary action on the same. However, the order on the restriction of movement with arms as per the recommendation of the peace committee came into effect only on February 7, 2015. Therefore, with many unanswered questions in mind, the Federation fails to understand as to why the precautionary measures Recommended by the Peace Committee could not be implemented on time which otherwise could have prevented the present situation,” the ENSF said.
Nevertheless, while appreciating the tireless efforts made by the district administration, the Federation reposts the faith on the law enforcing agencies that those culprits responsible for committing the crime would be booked and punished as per the law of the land so that the trust of the people is rebuilt, the ENSF stated.
Further, the federation appeals the citizens of Tuensang district to strictly cooperate with the order given by the district administration and to remain calm at this time when the students appear their exams. The elected members of Tuensang district should be confined in their respected camps and come back with sugar coated mouths only during election anticipating for votes from those people who are suffering at this juncture, it advised.
