Protestors during the fifth day of ENSF agitation.

Dimapur, Dec. 4 (EMN): The Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has announced temporary suspension of its agitation on account of an emergency presidential meeting of its six federating units — Confederation of Chang Students’ Union (CCSU), Khaimniungan Students’ Union (KSU), Konyak Students’ Union (KSU), Phom Students’ Conference (PSC), United Sangtam Students’ Conference, and Yimchunger Akheru Arih-Ako (YAA) — scheduled to be held in Tuensang.

The federation issued a press release on Friday directing its federating units to reach Tuensang by December 5, for the ‘presidential emergency meeting’.

It however stated that the agitation would resume “anytime as and when the federation directs”.

“All the advisors of ENSF, former senior leaders are also requested to reach our HQ. It is with utter dismay that in spite of the agitation entering the fifth day, the government giving a cold shoulder to the demands placed by the federation only shows how concerned (it is), and has succeeded time and again in depriving the people of eastern Nagas of their rights,” it stated.

Also, it informed that all the vehicles seized during the agitation would be released only after its demands are fulfilled.

ANCSU objects to ‘irrational demand’

One more student organisation has joined the growing chorus of opposition to the 45% job reservation in Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) demanded by the Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF).

The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU), in a statement issued on Friday, asserted that it is resolute towards a future that ensures meritocracy, a system that encourages the aspirants and policies that benefits the society as a whole.

“As such, the union heartily welcome and acknowledge the setting up of Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) which would go a long way in affirming fair competition. As no civilisation is forbidden to enhance one’s academic knowledge and experiences, through educational institutions or otherwise, it must be the endeavour of all to avoid illogical demand(s) that demeans the efficiency of a qualified aspirant. The ANCSU asserts with no doubt that certain section of our society needs special attention, but the union cannot be quiescent when the structure of meritocracy and fair competition is to be overshadowed taking such advantages,” the statement read.

While expressing gratitude to the present-day government for setting up NSSB, it requested the state government to apply good sense of judgement, impartially and rationally, and not bow down to short-sighted irrational and unethical demands which would vanquish the very purpose of NSSB.

“The ANCSU outrightly (sic) vow to object and encounter any element that obstructs the rational implementation of the NSSB. Furthermore, we impress upon the state government to implement the NSSB at the earliest,” it stated.
