Dimapur, June 16 (EMN):
The co-ordinator of Nagaland Domestic Workers Union (NDWU) Sr. Pramila Lobo wondered why there is delay in listening to their demand to enroll domestic workers under the schedule of employment, saying that many societies and economies would not be able to function without them.

She was speaking during the celebration of International Domestic Workers’ Day on the theme “decent work is our dream; never give up”, at Assisi Auditorium, Lakeview colony in Dimapur on Thursday. The programme was jointly organised by National Domestic Workers Movement Nagaland region with All Nagaland Domestic Workers’ Union (ANDWU).

She reiterated the demand to enroll domestic workers under the schedule of employment and give them minimum wages, as well as help them to avail schemes and other benefits.

Sr. Lobo said that International Domestic Workers’ Day is a significant occasion dedicated to all the hard work and commitment of the domestic workers, as well as a day to recognise their contributions to the economy.
She mentioned that it is also a day to show their strength and solidarity to the government and the public

“Every individual needs to treat them with respect, recognise their work, because employers’ home is their work place,” she asserted, adding that decent work includes decent wage, weekly off, annual leave, maternity benefit, decent living conditions and pension.

Rose Yanthan, Officer in-Charge of Women Police, said that it is important to know about the dignity of labour and that ‘no one will become small by doing small jobs’.

‘We are giving service to humans, and even if no one appreciates you, God will help you,’ she told the gathering.
She shared that International Domestic Workers Day is not only confined to women but includes men as well. ‘The whole world supports you, so do not be discouraged,’ she added.

Meanwhile, Advocate Priya Shyam said that respect should be given to all the domestic workers besides allowing them to enjoy their rights. She further told them to be aware of their rights and immediately speak out against any attempt of sexual harassment.

Furthermore, Kewekoti, Department of Labour, Kohima, said that no work is big or small. “Do not be disheartened as a domestic worker because every work is equal and we just have to enjoy our work,” he said.

He also assured that the state government and the NDWU will try to work together to recognise domestic workers under the schedule of employment.
