Endangered Red Serow rescued, donated to NZP

A Female Red Serow (Capricornisrubidus) was donated to Nagaland Zoological Park, Rangapahar on January 31 by Phutoifrom Hozukhe village under Niuland. It was initially kept under close observation and cared for in the Zoological Park before being released with a male serow which is in the Zoological Park.Phutoi, an ardent lover of wildlife believes in saving wildlife for the future generation. One Endangered Burmese Tortoise and a pair of Macaques were also donated to the zoo by him last year. The rescued female Serow has been introduced to the male and they are doing well.
The Red Serow is an endangered goat antelope. They are found in hilly tropical forests in northeastern India, Bangladesh and northern Myanmar. Usually solitary or lives in small groups of 2- 5 individuals, their numbers are fast depleting mainly due to Habitat loss and hunting.
According to a official press note, the species is fast disappearing due to the aforementioned reasons in Nagaland too.
The Director, Tongpangzemba Ao has conveyed his sincere appreciation to the donors for ‘such noble deeds in saving the animal and sending it to the Zoological Park’. The director has also thanked Khuhevi, Range Officer, Rangapahar territorial Range for providing all assistance to the Nagaland Zoological Park authorities to rescue the animals.
