ZAPAMI — Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Thursday asserted that emotional, cultural and social integration among Nagas could help strengthen efforts towards resolving the protracted Naga political issue.
Addressing the 17th Kuo descendants’ meet and the 56th anniversary celebration of Naga Kuotsu Union at Zapami village in Phek district, Rio said that physical integration of Naga-inhabited areas spread across Nagaland, Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Myanmar may not be possible.
However, he maintained that if Nagas unite as one people, others would respect their collective identity and a solution to the Naga political issue “can come immediately.”

The chief minister said that outsiders and even India have recognised the unique history, identity and culture of the Nagas, but “we are not able to recognise ourselves.”
In this regard, he encouraged people to strengthen the spirit of “Nagaism.”
Also, Rio reminded the gathering that while the world is changing rapidly, legacy remains timeless as it reminds people of who they are and reflects who they are becoming. He urged the gathering to remain grounded in their identity, culture and traditions while withstanding outside influences.

“A society that forgets its roots may grow, but it will neither endure nor last. A people who lose their identity may progress, but they will not lead and they will perish,” he said.
Rio also expressed hope that gatherings of Kuo descendants from different states would further strengthen unity among Nagas and contribute towards building a stronger Naga society. He urged the community members to serve as pillars of strength for future generations.
President of Naga Kuotsu Union, Peter Kuotsu, said the Kuo descendants comprise 89 villages, mostly from Nagaland, along with a few villages from Assam and Manipur. He also informed that the union honoured 12 Kuotsu achievers for outstanding accomplishments for the first time since the organisation’s formation in 1970.

During the event, the new team of office bearers of the Naga Kuotsu Union was also announced. Peter Kuotsu was re-elected president for the 2026–2029 tenure.
Earlier in the programme, Rio unveiled a monolith and released the silver jubilee souvenir of Aphoukhrori Kuotsu, Zapami.
Among those accompanying the chief minister at the event were MLA Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, Advisor Dr. Neisatuo Mero and MLA Kevipodi Sophie.
