Emergency meeting called to address waste crisis at Doyang Dam

DIMAPUR — The state Chief Secretary, J Alam, has convened an emergency meeting on June 7 to address the pressing environmental hazard posed by improper solid waste disposal in the upstream of the Doyang Dam Reservoir.

According to an update on Thursday, the meeting, to be held in the Conference Hall of the Chief Secretary, Civil Secretariat, Kohima at 10:30 am, will bring together key officials from relevant departments to develop specific prevention and mitigation measures.

The Chief Secretary’s directive comes after invoking the Disaster Management Act, 2005, Section 22 (2) (b) , (g), and (h), and demanding a preliminary report from the Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, Wokha and the Head of Plant (HoP), NEEPCO at Doyang by 10 am on June 7.

Officials including the Director General of Police, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF), Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Principal Secretary, PHED, State Commissioner, Commissioner & Secretary for Urban Development & Municipal Affairs, Secretary of Department of Water Resources, Commandant General, Home Guards, Civil Defence & SDRF, and Director for Urban Development & Municipal Affairs have been instructed to attend the meeting.

The Deputy Commissioner, Wokha and the HoP, NEEPCO at Doyang have also been directed to attend the meeting via video conference.
