DIMAPUR, JUNE 24: The Excise division of Dimapur has destroyed confiscated liquor on Friday. The liquor the worth of which was estimated at around Rs. 8,69,000 was destroyed at the division’s landfill.
The number of cases filed during the period September 1, 2015 to May 30, 2016 is 866, with 866 people arraigned in said connection.
An official report from the Excise on Friday said that the division’s mobile squads in the district had seized 23, 3384 bottles of assorted liquor comprising various brands of rum, whisky, wine and beer.
The additional commissioner of Excise, Phitongse Sangtam, said that the division had only a little over 300 personnel but they had been trying their best to ensure enforcement. To ‘fulfill’ the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, he said, onus was not only for the police but as much on the public and the churches. They should also contribute to keeping Nagaland ‘clean,’ he said and that the ‘public should come forward and change the mindset.’

The deputy commissioner of Excise, Lanuwati Jamir, also said during the day’s ceremonial event that every section of the community, besides the nongovernmental organizations, ought to help the enforcement authorities in all possible ways. To live as a ‘dry state,’ the landlords and colonies should not allow tenants who are into liquor business, Jamir suggested.
Within a span of just 14 months, the Excise department has arraigned 5, 960 liquor cases from across the state.
