Educational institutes organise various events, competitions

DIMAPUR — Educational institutions across the state held a variety of events, including lectures, awareness programmes, and competitions aimed at enhancing academic knowledge and personal development.

Sao Chang College: The entrepreneurship development centre at Sao Chang College, Tuensang, organised a one-day entrepreneur awareness programme on August 24 to cultivate entrepreneurial skills and inspire innovation among budding entrepreneurs.

The programme was sponsored by the North Eastern Council (NEC), Shillong, with the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship, Guwahati, serving as the nodal agency, providing essential support and resources, according to a press release.

It was attended by over 40 aspiring entrepreneurs from various fields.

St. Joseph University: The department of Physics, in collaboration with the Institute’s Innovation Council (IIC), hosted a lecture on “Aspects of Physics in nanoscience” on August 23 at St. Joseph University, Chümoukedima.

The event was attended by physics students, scholars from various departments, and faculty.

Guest speaker Dr. M Kumaresavanji, assistant professor at National College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli, provided an overview of nanotechnology and its myriad applications in everyday life on the occasion.

St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama: St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama celebrated the 37th freshers’ day on August 24 at the Indoor Stadium.

The guest speaker for the event, Johnny Ruangmei, joint chief executive officer, NSDMA, speaking on the occasion, asserted that illiteracy stems from an inability to learn, unlearn, and relearn. He challenged the young minds to avoid a myopic perspective and to broaden their mindset.

He also pointed out two major flaws in the education system: the first being quantitative, with an estimated need for 60 million teachers for 200 million children by 2030. The second flaw, from a qualitative perspective, is the lack of personalisation and relevance.

MGM College: The Red Ribbon Club (RRC) of MGM College, Dimapur, organised a speech and poster-making competition in the college auditorium on August 23.

The competitions were held on the themes ‘Remember and commit’ for the speech competition and ‘HIV/AIDS: Breaking the chain’ for the poster-making competition, according to an update.

The winners of both the speech and poster-making competitions were awarded cash prizes and certificates.

Sazolie College: The English department and Book Club of Sazolie College, Kohima, collaboratively organised the 11th literary day on August 29 at Vineizono Hall, on the theme “Understanding and contextualising the northeast through literature”.

Dr. Sentinaro, assistant professor at Baptist College, Kohima, attended the event as the resource person.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sentinaro highlighted the crucial role of literature in shaping the understanding and contextualisation of a region. She emphasised how literature vividly represents culture and identity through narratives and settings that articulate local perspectives.

She also spoke on the growing popularity of northeastern writings in recent years, while cautioning against the outsider’s perspective and influence on the region’s own writings and projections.

The event featured various competitions, including poetry writing, essay writing, painting and sketching, photography, and a quiz competition in which about 70 students participated.

NEISSR: The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) held a folklore story competition, organised by its cultural and music club, on August 24 at the Bishop Abraham Memorial Hall, Peace Centre, Chümoukedima.

The competition featured participants from various clubs within NEISSR, including the green club, literary club, electoral literacy club, media club, cultural and music club, gender champion club, and red ribbon club.

The stories presented during the competition were carefully chosen to represent different aspects of the region’s folklore. The storytelling was judged not only on the content but also on delivery, creativity, and the ability to engage the audience.
