DIMAPUR — A demolition drive against illegal road encroachment on the stretch of road between the four-lane junction in Purana Bazar and Dhansari Bridge (towards the Naga Shopping Arcade) was conducted on Saturday, an initiative of the recently-formed East Dimapur Town Council (EDTC).

According to EDTC chairman Niuto Awomi, the building owner had illegally encroached upon the road by constructing concrete pavement. He informed that the building owner was made to bear the cost of demolishing the pavement, including the use of heavy machinery.

Awomi estimated that the illegally-constructed pavement spanned a distance of 500 ft, adding that the entire stretch of road from the four-lane junction in Purana Bazar to the Dhansari Bridge could measure around 1,000 ft.

He informed that all similar illegal encroachments under the jurisdiction of EDTC—be it encroachment upon drainage system, road or government land—would be cleared.

When asked about the potential relocation of schools not situated in feasible areas in respect of parking space and resultant inconvenience to public—which was previously discussed during a public coordination meeting at the EDTC hall in Purana Bazaar—he responded that they have issued notices to two private schools to relocate.

According to the EDTC chairman, the two schools were found to be lacking in space, particularly for parking vehicles.

He added that the school proprietors have agreed to this decision and have been given a four-year period to relocate their respective schools.

Pointing out that ULB election in Nagaland could be held only after a gap of 20 years, Awomi pointed out that it would take time for improvements to materialise.

However, he assured that they will gradually develop and repair the roads and drainage systems under EDTC jurisdiction.

He also pointed out that no funds have been sanctioned yet. But once the fund is approved, development works will commence, he added.
